Limescale is the bane of showers, baths and toilets in any household. It forms from hard water, it’s hard to get rid of, and if left untreated, can create a lot of problems to your plumbing installation.

The most recommended solutions for preventing (and in some cases, removing) hard water and limescale is to install an electronic water conditioner or water softeners in your home. But if the problem has already set in, fear not. We have a list of handy DIY tips to help you get rid of your limescale problem.

Water Softener:

  • Mostly used for large build-ups of limescale on water kettles and containers. Fill them up with water, add a few tablespoons of water softener and then boil for 2 minutes.

Lemon juice and Vinegar:

  • Place the mixture in a spray bottle and spray everything that has lime build-up.

Water and Vinegar:

  • Submerge the shower head overnight in a mixture of water and vinegar. This should help remove the lime deposits.

Vinegar and Borax:

  • A magic concoction that works wonders on toilets with hard water stains. Drain the water from the toilet bowl, and place a mixture of equal parts vinegar and borax, covering as much of the bowl as possible, and then leave it for a few hours.

Vinegar:

  • A simple and effective way of cleaning your washing machine. Wash away your hard water deposits by adding a gallon of vinegar into the water during a normal cycle.
