As great as they are, garbage disposal units sometimes jam up seemingly for no reason. How to fix this? In most cases, the jam is caused by something stuck inside the unit, blocking the blades. Easiest way to check this is to turn on the machine and listen for a humming sound. The circuit breaker will turn the unit off after a few seconds. If, however, it doesn’t make any sound at all, we recommend you check to see if there’s electricity going into it (see if the reset button is lit up). Try the same outlet with a different appliance and see if that works. If it does, it means your garbage disposal unit is fried and will need replacement.

In case of an obstruction, check these few steps on how to clear it by yourself:

  • Unplug the unit.
  • Insert an Allen key into the bottom-center slot of the disposal unit.
  • Rotate the key back and forth a few times until you can freely turn it around in both directions.
  • If that fails, attempt to remove the obstruction by hand and check to see if the blades can spin. ALWAYS double check to see if you unplugged the unit. By putting your hand into a powered on unit, you risk serious injury.
  • Once the blades feel like they spin freely, plug the unit back on and toggle the on/off switch a few times to make sure the obstruction has been cleared.

If even after all that, your unit doesn’t spin, or doesn’t turn on anymore, it means there’s a more serious underlying issue that needs professional attention. Give us a call and we’ll be happy to sort it out for you.
